CG Masters Class Demo

Another Environment sketch which evolved into a moody tonal painting.  The goal here wasn't as much about technical correctness as it was about developing the character of a setting to reflect the personality of the inhabitant.  Loosely based on The Princess & The Frog, I imagined this place as the circus big top home of a traveling Voodoo trickster.

CG Masters Class Demo

Here is a thumbnail drawing and tonal painting I did for my CG Masters Class: Environment Sketching for Production.  What began as a retelling of Beauty & The Beast became more of Disney's Haunted Mansion.  More to come!

BG Paintings for Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck (HBO)

I had the opportunity to paint some backdrops for the bio pic about the late Kurt Cobain.  This was a loose, painterly style, to mimic oil paint.  Lots of fun working on a film again!   Thanks to Ken Duncan for the Art Direction.

Legends of Oz: Dorothy's Return Color Keys

I painted color keys for most of the film.  These were painted over rough black/white model screenshots.  Vis Dev paintings from the rest of the art team were a big help in establishing key/mood for each sequence.  The goal of these images are to describe lighting direction and the combination of local color with that light applied to each shot.

From 2009-2012 I had the great fortune of creating Vis Dev for this film, along with talented team of artists.  May 9 the film was finally released in theaters.  I am excited to show my work.

Concept Illustration: Character Clash

Vis Dev class painting demo.  I used the setting of Skyrim to stage a scene of a Player Character versus an enemy. Topics of composition, lighting and digital painting process are also covered in this assignment.

Stylized Lunar Base

I demonstrated my process of tonal and color painting for my Advanced Drawing class. Their assignment is to create a lunar base in the style of the animated short Burning Safari, from Studio Gobelins.

LCAD demo: Castle Interior

The second assignment for my Advanced Drawing class is a design of a Castle or Dungeon Interior.  I used a recent drawing as a base for my demo.  I made it more ancient/mystical and weathered.  This is a layout of an exploration space for game play similar to the Uncharted series.

Urban Environment LCAD class demo

This is done for my Advanced Drawing for Game class at Laguna College of Art + Design.  Assignments mostly include environments, but also Prop Design, Call out drawings and some characters.  The first assignment was to design a present day urban environment.  I demonstrated my process of research, thumbnail drawing, lighting and digital painting.  The theme is loosely based on The Last of Us.

Kazone Art Academy class demo: Fantasy setting

This is done for my Visual Development for Animation class at Kazone Art Academy.  I demonstrated my process of research, thumbnail drawing and digital painting.  I studied Gothic cathedrals and fantasy castles.  The subject of this scene is based on Minas Tirith, in LOTR.
